This online workshop goes beyond the "right and wrong" decision-making commonly covered in ethics workshops and gives advocates a hands-on framework for understanding ethical challenges as they relate to victim-centered advocacy work. Professionals will learn different model approaches to address ethical dilemmas, and will examine effective ways to apply ethical principles in a practical way to advocacy work. This is an interactive 3-hour ethics training, available for 3 CEUs. This training is tailored to help professionals understand the changes in social work ethics and how they can inform effective victim advocacy.

Course Objectives:
The participants of this course will:
• Become familiar with the National Organization for Victim Assistance Code of Ethics as well as National Association of Social Work Code of Ethics, the recent changes to the codes, and the reasoning for such changes;
• Be able to identify one of their own beliefs or values that impact their ability to provide services to victims of crime;
• Understand the difference between an ethical question and ethical dilemma; and
• Explore the use of model strategies to resolve ethical dilemmas in victim advocacy and social work practice.

About the Presenters:

Dorthy Stucky Halley, LMSW, co-founder and co-director of the Family Peace Initiative, was the director of a domestic violence shelter from 1986 to 1996, and has served as an expert witness in domestic violence cases since 1989. She has worked with those who batter since 1991. She taught social work at Pittsburg State University for a decade before becoming the state’s Victim Rights Coordinator and directing the Victim Services Division of the Kansas Attorney General’s Office. Her development of a motivation typology for those who batter has opened the door to a new understanding for domestic violence professionals. She led the state efforts to develop standards and certify battering intervention programs. She has also served as President of: the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, Kansas Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, and Kansas Organization for Victim Assistance. She currently serves on the International Public Policy Institute Board of Directors.

Audra Fullerton, LMSW, Director of Training, served justice-involved women and gender-diverse populations as the Director of the Peaceful Families Program from 2016-2020. Since then, she has led the agency’s shift in training offerings from in-person to online, and expanded its reach in numbers and geography. Prior to that, Audra worked in domestic violence victim advocacy for 5 years. She earned her Bachelor of Music from the University of Nebraska and her Master of Social work from the University of Kansas where she graduated as an Integrated Health Scholar. She is a passionate advocate for women’s rights, justice for incarcerated people, and Waldorf education. Audra is a Master Trainer of the Family Peace Initiative's Internal-Focused Dialogue and licensed social worker in the state of Kansas. In addition, she is a founding board member of the non-profit, #BeMoreLikeClaire.
